Reading
Reading is critical skill that touches every area of life, and every aspect of learning. The Promethean ActivClassroom is an effective tool that helps teachers to engage their students to build essential reading skills. The following aligns the Promethean ActivClassroom to the key building blocks to reading success identified by The National Reading Panel.
Phoenemic Awareness
- Access to oral language is a beginning key to reading success, and the ActivClassroom provides multi-modal access
- The ActivClassroom provides the perfect environment with teacher access to the pre-recorded libraries and the ability to record the student’s own sounds for playback and ear-training
- Teachers can use the ActivClassroom solution to manipulate sounds to blend, segment, or substitute phonemes to form or create new words
Phonics
- Must be systematic and explicit instruction for success
- Helps students learn phonics by associating and corresponding sounds to their symbols
- Provides opportunities for students to apply and practice what they have learned by manipulating those sounds and their symbols
Fluency
- In the prerecording libraries teachers can find models of fluent reader
- Teacher can model fluent reading to the students
- Using voice recorder, teachers can help improve fluency through the students hearing themselves and improving on that fluency
- Choral reading, recorded-assisted reading, partner reading, and reader’s theatre all work well in the ActivClassroom environment
- Best practice for building fluent readers is to read orally using repeating and monitoring techniques to develop automaticity
- Provides teachers with an environment to bridge the gap between words and their meanings and comprehension and model that skill
Vocabulary
- Teachers have the perfect environment to move students’ vocabulary to ever-higher levels—from listening vocabulary, to speaking, to reading, and, eventually, to writing
- Students learn meanings through their interaction with oral and written language; teachers can use techniques in KWL , oral close, and many others for instruction and practice
- Teachers can deliver Daily Oral Language vocabulary activities on the ActivBoard
- Use of the ActivBoard to teach word parts or morphemes for the building blocks of good vocabulary in prefixes, suffixes, base words, and root words
- Access to text for instruction of new words, practice of context clues, and enrichment of meaning
- Internet access to online dictionaries and reference guides
- Tools to provide opportunities for practice in reading, speaking, and writing using new vocabulary words
Comprehension
- The ActivClassroom provides many opportunities for purposeful and active reading known to build good reading comprehension
- Provides the perfect environment for graphic and semantic organizers
- Teachers help students focus on the structure and meaning of the text by giving students tools they can use to decipher text
- Using good pedagogy for teaching comprehension, teachers can deliver direct instruction, model by talking through their own strategies, guide the students in the application of their strategies, and help students apply what they have learned and read
The ActivClassroom provides the perfect opportunities through Promethean Planet for reading and learning in all content areas for success across the curriculum

Today's technology-based instruction emphasizes students constructing meaning based on a high degree of interactivity among students, between students and curriculum, and between students and teacher. An emerging class of technology that offers enormous potential in generating these interactions is interactive whiteboards or IWBs. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential of IWB technology in lighting the flame of learning for English Language Learners.
